VIRGINIA - In the race for Virginia Governor, results of a new Quinnipiac poll are out and they show Democrat Terry McAuliffe ahead of Republican Ken Cuccinelli.
The Polling Institute says it's likely the recent investigation into Governor Bob McDonnell is a factor.
"it would be naïve not to think that the troubles that Governor McDonnell has had are not rubbing off on Ken Cuccinelli," says Quinnipiac Polling Institute Assistant Director Peter Brown. "It may not be fair but guilt by association is a fact of life and almost certainly it's having some impact."
"It's been a negative campaign about the various candidates so that is the big deal in this election."
"This campaign seems to be more about personalities than issues there's relatively little discussion on the issues."
"What we found is that when we asked voters who was better on things like understanding the needs of average voters, Mr. McAuliffe wins, when we asked who has the right experience to be Governor, Cuccinelli wins. And on the most important question of honesty and trustworthiness, which voters say is the most important thing to them, then the two candidates are virtually even."
As far as other races in Virginia, the poll found that more than 3 out of 4 voters don't know enough about any of the candidates for attorney general and lieutenant governor to form an opinion.
Cuccinelli, McAuliffe and Libertarian Party
candidate Robert Sarvis will be running for the office on November 5."
