CHESTERFIELD - Shoplifting numbers are up about 20 percent in Chesterfield County and with back to school shopping in full swing, there's already been 67 cases reported this month alone.
Most of the thefts are happening at large stores like Kohls,Target, Walmart, and Ross. These businesses have their own loss prevention officers so most of the time, the shoplifters are caught.
In 80 percent of shoplifting cases in Chesterfield, the thief is found, charged and prosecuted.
"Normally, a loss prevention officer witnesses these crimes in progress and then detains the person until patrol officers can get there and make an arrest," says Lt. Steve Grohowski.
Some of shoplifting the suspects might surprise you - mothers with kids buying back to school clothes.
That's not only happening here but across the country.
