RICHMOND, VA—Police have identified the man who was killed when his scooter was struck by a car early Sunday morning in Richmond.

Police identified the victim as 35-year-old Robert L. Vannote of Richmond.

It happened just before 9:45 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Fairmount Avenue and North 23rd Street.

Police say Vannote's scooter was struck by a Mitsubishi Gallant sedan.

Those near the scene tried to roll the car off of the Vannote, and eventually someone was able to use a jack to lift the car off of him.

Vannote was taken to VCU Medical Center where he later died.

The driver of the car was not injured. Authorities are working with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be filed, police said.

The Richmond Police Department Crash Team interviewed witnesses and took measurements of the crash scene in the course of the investigation.

Fairmount Avenue was closed in both directions to accommodate the investigation.
