CHESTERFIELD, VA—On Monday, Chesterfield County Police wrapped up their final neighborhood canvass, searching for clues that could lead them to the person who fired a gun the night of July 4th that left 7-year-old Brendon Mackey dead after he was struck by a stray bullet.
Brendon Mackey, 7, died Friday, July 5 after he was struck by a stray bullet the night of July 4th as he was walked with his family to a fireworks show in Brandermill over the Swift Creek Reservoir.
Chesterfield County Police went door-to-door Monday, visiting homes in the Brandermill area, hoping to find information that could lead them to the person who fired the fatal shot.
So far, investigators still don't know who pulled the trigger.
Police said the gun was likely fired within a 7,100-square-foot radius from where Mackey was struck, and said the bullet is believed to have been fired at a 55- to 70-degree angle and came almost straight down.
Chesterfield Police said the bullet that struck Brendon was a .40-caliber round. That caliber bullet could have been fired from multiple types of gun manufacturers, including GLOCK, Heckler & Koch, IMI, Kahr Arms and Vektor Pistols.
Authorities said the bullet that struck Brendon was likely fired from a handgun.
Police say Brendon fell to the ground just before 9 p.m. on July 4th. Bystanders rushed to help the boy and discovered he was bleeding from the head. Brendon was rushed to VCU Medical Center where doctors discovered a gunshot wound in the top of his head.
A funeral was held Friday, July 12, 2013 at Brandermill Church in Chesterfield County. Mackey was remembered during a memorial service at The Brandermill Church on Sunday, July 7.
Chesterfield Police continue to ask for the public's help in identifying who fired the shot that fatally struck the child.
Anyone who may have fired a gun or knows someone who was firing a gun within a five-mile radius of Swift Creek Reservoir Thursday night is asked to call police immediately at 748-1251 or Crime Solvers at 748-0660.
