DINWIDDIE, VA—Police in Dinwiddie are searching for the person behind a senseless crime that's left the entire community in shock.
Carter Northington, 70, died Monday after he was found severely beaten and left at a vacant home in Dinwiddie County.
His body was found Monday night in the 23000 block of Cox Road in northern Dinwiddie County.
It's a crime that's shocked the entire community.
"I just saw him the other day when I was turning to come home," Patricia Barnes, who lived next door to Northington, said. "He was walking with his little stick."
Police say Northington was beaten and left in the yard of a vacant house.
"It's sad—it's sad that a 70-year-old man that's minding his own business and somebody does that," said Buddy Yager who lives nearby.
A neighbor tells 8News a woman walking her dog discovered him Monday night. She says it looked like his head had been beaten with a brick, but said he was still breathing when she found him.
Northington was rushed to the hospital where he died Tuesday afternoon.
"It is suspicious, it's very suspicious and a lot of unanswered questions at this point," said Maj. William Knott with the Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Office.
Neighbors say Northington kept the same schedule every day— he'd walk around the neighborhood picking up cans to earn some extra cash and then he'd head to Food Lion and return home again.
They tell 8News they have no idea who would attack Northington, but say they believe it was for money.
"I'm thinking first of the month he probably gotten his social security check, somebody knew about that Northington lived alone," Yager said.
While detectives search for whoever is responsible, neighbors pray for justice.
