RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A panel of legal experts that has been studying Virginia's death penalty is set to release its report.
The Virginia Death Penalty Assessment Team will announce its findings and recommendations at a news conference Thursday in Richmond.
The study is part of an American Bar Association initiative to examine policies and procedures in every state that has the death penalty. Rather than focus on whether capital punishment is appropriate, the study looks at fairness and safeguards against mistakes.
The panel is led by University of Richmond law professor John Douglass.
