If you need some inspiration, look no further than Richmond paramedic Brian Hupp.
In the past year, he's lost 175 pounds without surgery. He did it by giving up processed foods and having an unbeatable drive to get fit to honor complete strangers.
Here's Brian's story in his own words:
"9/11 has always pulled at the heart strings of everybody in public safety."
"Those guys weren't responding to the World Trade Center. Those guys weren't responding to 9/11, they were responding to a call and I respond to several hundred calls a year and any one of those calls could be that exact same call."
"It all started last August, I believe. On scene of a vehicle accident, I was talking to a fire lieutenant about the upcoming September 11 Memorial Stair Climb."
"At that point I was a little over 450 pounds. I was morbidly obese, a pack a day smoking habit, grossly out of shape."
"The stair climb is to remember the victims of the tragedies on September 11, 2001. Especially firefighters from NYC that were killed, 343 firefighters."
"It really took realizing that I wanted to do that and couldn't do it to realize I had to make serious life changes."
"We ran the stairs initially a couple times a month, then once a week, then twice a week, then with weight on, then what we'd wear everyday on an actual scene to the point where I'm at now."
"I follow a strict paleo lifestyle and I work out 4-5 times a week."
"I told myself every day that I couldn't do it, I told myself every day and it took somebody looking at me and saying you can do this"
"I had a police officer walk up to me at a crime scene the other day and say ‘aren't you the guy who used to be fat.' and I thought for a second, yeah, I was the guy who used to be fat."
"I hope to do this every year until I'm unable to do it anymore."
On Sunday, Hupp and other first responders will climb 22 flights of stairs five times at the Sun Trust building downtown to honor the fallen who climbed 110 stories at the twin towers.
The Richmond 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb begins at 7 a.m.
