ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)—What was supposed to be a routine traffic stop turned into a deadly pursuit Thursday afternoon.

At 4:49 p.m. on Sept. 12, an Orange County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to stop a 2002 Chevrolet SUV on Black Level Road. When the driver refused to pull over, a southbound pursuit led the suspect and deputy to the Town of Gordonsville.

Law enforcement witnessed the suspect throwing items from his car, and managed to stop the vehicle at the intersection of Baker and Linney streets. The suspect resisted arrest, but was eventually placed in the back of the deputy's vehicle.

About 20 minutes after the stop was made, the suspect, 34-year-old Gerard Cowherd of Charlottesville, advised law enforcement that he had ingested illegal narcotics. EMS was contacted immediately and Cowherd was rushed to Martha Jefferson Hospital, where he died.

An autopsy is being conducted on Friday, Sept. 13. Stay with 8News for updates.
