HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)—By the end of next week, the Henrico County School Board will have a new member. But there are a few steps the board needs to take before making the hire.
One of those steps is to let the public weigh in; a special meeting will be held Thursday evening for the public. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the candidates in person. On Sept. 19, the eight school board candidates will make their pitches and then take questions from the public.
The vacant seat became available after a summer shake-up on the board involving conflicts of interest.
Superintendent Patrick Russo was put on paid leave, and school board member Diana Winston resigned after her husband's company, Techno Marketing, allegedly received special interest from the board. 8News obtained documents that revealed his company made money off the school system and sold more than $100,000 of items to Henrico County Public Schools. Winston's seat is now open for the taking.
The special meeting starts at six o'clock on Thursday, Sept. 19 at the New Bridge Learning Center at 5915 Nine Mile Road in Richmond.
The eight candidates' letters of interest and resumes can be viewed here.
