RICHMOND (WRIC)—On Wednesday the federal government released health insurance premiums for 2014, for those who opt to get insurance under the Affordable Care Act.
A family of four in Virginia making $50,000 a year could pay anywhere from $48 a month to nearly $800 a month. It all depends on a few factors, and how certain questions are answered.
Chesterfield County residents Billy and Angie Jones have a lot of questions about the Affordable Care Act.
"It looks extremely confusing," Billy Jones said.
Billy is self-employed, so right now the Joneses have a private health insurance policy.
"We have bounced back and forth between insurance companies for the last few years," Jones said.
Starting Tuesday, the Joneses—and other Virginians—can compare their current premiums to those offered under Obamacare.
"Most people just don't know where to start," said Linda Meyerhoffer, president of Your Health Virginia.
Meyerhoffer runs a company that helps Virginians try to figure it all out. She says that on Oct. 1, residents can visit HealthCare.gov and enter their age, zip code, smoking habits and income.
Some plans will be basic, others more comprehensive. Everyone will pay a different rate and will be able to choose from different insurance companies.
"You're gonna need help trying to figure out which one to pick because there'll be differences in each one," Meyerhoffer said.
The Joneses say they plan to stick with their current insurance company, but will likely check out the health exchanges and compare their rates.
"I think it's important people are aware of what's out there and their options and doing what's best for them and for their family," Angie Jones said.
Some individuals may qualify for financial help from the government, while many already have insurance through their employers. Those seeking healthcare coverage also have the option of shopping for a private policy outside of the government marketplace.
