HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)—After a summer scandal sent its superintendent home and forced a member to resign, the Henrico School Board finally named a replacement Thursday night.
Real estate attorney Robert Boyle was selected among eight candidates to fill the vacant school board seat.
"I'm a little surprised, but happily surprised," Boyle said. "Obviously I put my name forward, so was very willing and interested in taking the position."
Boyle will replace Diana Winston, who resigned in the summer over a conflict of interest issue; 8News obtained documents showing her husband's company, Techno Marketing, made hundreds of thousands of dollars selling items to Henrico County Public Schools. Superintendent Patrick Russo was put on paid leave, as he is a close friend of Winston's.
Board members say Boyle is a great replacement; he has worked on several school committees and is expected to help get the board through a turbulent time.
"It's rare to find somebody that has the qualifications that Mr. Boyle has and who is truly doing this as a public service," said School Board Chair Beverly Cocke.
Boyle will take over the Three Chopt District and remain there until next year, when voters will have the chance to elect a new member.
Boyle told 8News that budgets and the current situation with the school board are his priorities.
"Really just try to help the school [board] transition through the period we're going through now, and move forward in a positive way," he said. "Try to make our educational system the best we can."
