John Bernier has been the chief meteorologist for WRIC TV8 since 1984. He also serves as meteorologist for the Seve Batton Morning show on radio in Virginia Beach, WGAI in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, WCXL in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and WWOC-FM in Hatteras, North Carolina. Additionally, John is an adjunct faculty member of the Center for Environmental Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.
John holds a B.S. degree in Meteorology from the University of Lowell, Massachusetts, Magna Cum Laude. He is an American Meteorological Society's Certified Broadcast Meteorologist and the most experienced active holder of the National Weather Association's Certification of Television Weathercasting.
John is also the recipient of a Special Service Award from the National Weather Service for work done concerning severe weather and multiple AP awards for Best Weathercast/Weathercaster. He won the 1993 Emmy for the best weathercaster in the mid Atlantic region.
John is the former Media Editor for the National Weather Association's Quarterly Digest. He is also a founding member of the National Weather Association's Committee on radio and television weathercasting. John is married, has two children, and resides in Midlothian, Virginia.
