Parent Outraged Over School Health Cartoon

Posted: Updated:

CHESTEFIELD - A Chesterfield dad is outraged after his daughter came home with a questionable flyer from her health class.

The Matoaca freshman was given a picture of a cartoon man standing on a scale with a book in his hand. The caption reads: "Why Johnny can't read or do math - he can't see the book or the numbers."

T.J. Dean says he believes his daughter's teacher is sending the wrong message to her students.

"It says, 'fat people are stupid,'" said Dean. "There's no other way to read into that, there's nothing else I can say about that."

Dean is the first to admit he and his family aren't small people, but he's afraid his daughter will become a target for bullies.

"I know I'm overweight, but why point that out?" he asked. "Kids are cruel. Ammunition to pick on kids is a bad idea, especially when it's handed out by one of our teachers."

Dean took the matter to Matoaca High's principal. According to Dean, the principal said there will be ramifications for the teacher who handed out the flyer but wouldn't disclose what those might be at this time.

The school administration issued the following statement:

"Wednesday morning, the school administration of Matoaca High School was made aware that a flyer depicting an inappropriate cartoon regarding health and wellness was distributed in a classroom.  The school administration will continue to work directly with Matoaca High School families."
