HENRICO - Parents and students have a new tool to make lunchtime easier.
The school's lunch app "Nutri Slice" puts the menu and nutritional information right in your hands.
From providing picky eaters with pictures of food to giving parents exact nutritional information, it will even help out if your child has a food allergy -- and to top it all off, its saving the school district thousands of dollars.
Robert Nomberg has a first grader in the Henrico school system. He's using the new app as a planning tool.
"Instead of just naming one of the foods, in this case I can open up the app, show him the picture and instead of the blank stare of what this food or that food really are, just showing him the picture then I get a smile or a frown or a thumbs up or down.
When you download the app, you can select your child's school to see a full menu with prices, photos, ingredients and nutritional information and it's published weeks in advance.
And because it lists every ingredient, it can really help parents who have kids with food allergies.
"Precautions are already in place to prevent that kind of situation anyway," says Henrico Public Schools Spokesperson Andy Jenks. "But this is one more way for parents and kids to know in advance what's going to be in the school lunch line on any given day."
And "Nutri Slice" will be saving the school system big bucks.
Starting in December, printed menus will be a thing of the past. Usually over 26,000 menus are printed a month, sending those home with kids costs $18,000 a year. But the subscription for the app is a little over $12,000 - over $6,000 in savings.
