Richmond Free Press Dropping 'Redskins' from its Pages

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Richmond Free Press is dropping the Redskins nickname for the Washington NFL team from its pages, calling it racist.

"We want to make it absolutely clear that the Richmond Free Press does not endorse or promote that outrageous nickname," says editor and publisher Ray Boone.

In an editorial Thursday, the weekly primarily aimed at the city's African-American community called the name insulting to Native Americans and divisive.

"The name stems from the fact that Native Americans were scalped and butchered and a profit was made from it. We cannot accept."

Instead of using the name Redskins, the newspaper is printing Washington or D.C.'s professional football team.

"You can see it in our headlines. We call them Washington. We call them DC, and that's accurate and more patriotic."

Redskins owner Dan Snyder is also sounding off in a recent letter sent to fans, which says in part:

"I respect the opinions of those who disagree. I want them to know that I do hear them, and I will continue to listen and learn. After 81 years, the team name "Redskins" continues to hold the memories and meaning of where we came from, who we are, and who we want to be in years to come."
