CAROLINE COUNTY – Students at Caroline High School are mourning the death of another classmate in less than a week.
A 14-year-old Caroline High student died Monday in an apparent suicide. The student's death came one week after Caroline High student Tommy Wheeler died participating in gym class. Students held a candlelight vigil on Monday to honor Wheeler.
"It doesn't get easier dealing with the grief of losing a student," says Principal Jeff Wick. "It's kind of compounded when it happens like you said two students in about five or six days."
Counselors from multiple schools have come to help as well as pastors, saying they are seeing students take advantage of the opportunity.
"A number of students come down to speak to counselors and or their pastors," he says. "They do a lot to express themselves and I think that's what helps them through it."
Superintendent Greg Killough is hoping to see even more students open up.
"We may think we're invincible but knowing that, we gotta go to our parents, reaching out and knowing that sometimes we need support and help."
Counseling director Melissa Hipple says for parents it's important not to push students to talk but be around them.
"They're getting help from each other and it helps when we talk to students to talk about the positive memories they have of their friends.".
Meanwhile investigators say there is no evidence of foul play or bullying regarding the most recent death.
Caroline County Sheriff's Office released the following statement.
"A tragedy has occurred in Caroline County, where a 14-year-old has taken her life. There is no evidence that leads to foul play or bullying as the cause of this young lady's death. The Caroline County Sheriff's Office Investigators have been working closely with family members and sharing information with them.
