HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)—One man is dead and four people are in the hospital after a Henrico County school bus collided with a Jeep Monday morning.
The incident occurred just after 7 a.m. on Oct. 28 at the intersection of New Market Road and Hickory Avenue.
A Jeep Commander was traveling west on new Market Road when the Jeep crossed into the path of the school bus and collided with the school bus approximately 500 feet east of Hickory Avenue.
The driver of the Jeep, Rodney R. Roane Jr., 23, was transported to VCU Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. Four people were on the school bus, and three of them - an adult female bus driver, adult female bus aide and a male juvenile student, were transported to the hospital from the scene with minor injuries. Another student, a juvenile male, was transported to the hospital by family to be treated for minor injuries.
The bus was headed to the John G. Wood School, a special needs school in western Henrico County. Though the school is private, Henrico County Public Schools provides transportation for the two teens who were involved in the crash.
"Ordinarily the students would have to attend a public school, but we've determined their needs are best met in a private setting so we provide that transportation to the families," says Henrico Schools spokesman Andy Jenks.
