UPDATE: The deceased GMC driver has been identified as Irvin L. Simmons, 42, 1300 block Garber Street, Richmond, Va. The investigation is on-going as state police continues to consult with the Henrico County Commonwealth Attorney's Office.
HENRICO, Va - All lanes are back open following a fatal vehicle crash on Interstate 64 westbound at Laburnum Avenue in Henrico County.
Shortly before 3:30 p.m. Monday, state police responded to the scene after the driver of a 2000 Pontiac Montana struck a 2000 GMC Safari. The impact caused the driver of the GMC to lose control and overturn.
The driver of the GMC, who was not wearing his safety belt, was ejected from the vehicle. He suffered serious life threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital where he later died.
The driver and a passenger in the Pontiac were also not wearing their safety belts and suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. They were both transported to VCU Medical Center.
The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting with the on-going investigation. Virginia State Police is consulting with the Henrico County Commonwealth Attorney's Office as charges are pending against the driver of the Pontiac.
Identity of the deceased is pending next of kin notification
Pontiac Driver: 34 year-old male, Richmond, Va.
Pontiac Passenger: 54 year-old male, West Point, Va.
Deceased GMC Driver: 42 year-old male, Richmond, Va.
The second crash occurred on I-64 eastbound at Laburnum Avenue. The crash involved three vehicles and one person suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. The crash remains under investigation.
