Glitch in Va. Voting System Nearly Lost Absentee Ballot Applications

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND (WRIC)—Election Day is just one week away, but some people who think they are registered to vote may not get the chance come Nov. 5.

There have been glitches in a system that's supposed to collect absentee ballot applications—and that's not the only thing affecting Virginia voters this election season.

For about 25 hours, the fax machine at the City of Richmond Office of the General Registrar wasn't working. Until a call came in, people who faxed in absentee ballot applications almost slipped through the cracks.

"It added one or two gray hairs to my head, because we had no idea who might have been trying to reach us," said Kirk Showalter, of the Office of the General Registrar in Richmond. "As luck would have it, we did have two voters who double checked with us, which was wonderful, and that's what tipped us to the problem."

The city's IT department took on the case and thinks it has now gotten a hold of all of the applications that were faxed in while the system was down.

Still, there have been even bigger issues this election cycle—about 39,000 names have been taken off Virginia's voter rolls. The State Board of Elections says those are people registered to vote in at least two states, including Virginia.

As a result, the Democratic Party of Virginia sued Gov. Bob McDonnell and Atty. Gen. Ken Cuccinelli in an effort to retrieve the purged names. Some were successfully reinstated, but thousands more are still on the "no vote" list.

A federal judge says the purge was done correctly.

The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot in Virginia is Tuesday, Oct. 29.
