Portland Billboard Causes Controversy in Chinatown
PORTLAND, Ore. (WRIC)—Billboards are meant to draw attention, but one billboard in Portland, Ore. is drawing attention for all the wrong reasons, and now it's being changed.
The billboard reads "We Love You Long Time," and was put up in the city's Chinatown district by radio station KXL.
Some who live in the area say the sign is offensive and racist.
"The more I learn about it, I think it's really … there's something off base," said Louis Lee, who lives near the sign.
The radio station is now removing the billboard and has apologized in a statement on its Facebook page saying, "It's a famous quote from an old rap song, we thought it would get attention but in no way meant disrespect to anyone."
The station says it decided to change the message on the billboard after some believed it to be "insensitive." The new sign will read "Stay Connected, my friends. FM NEWS 101".
