NEW KENT (WRIC) - A 15-year-old New Kent High School player died Tuesday after collapsing at practice, according to Daily Press.
Sophomore linebacker Jacob Vick reportedly collapsed during team drills at practice Tuesday afternoon. Vick was transported to the hospital by helicopter where he later died.
"It's just a tragedy and my heart goes out to the family and of course the New Kent community," says resident Bubba Ganett. "It's something that will be a long time getting over."
The exact cause of the teen's death has not yet been determined. A few weeks ago, he suffered a concussion, then sat out from practice and two games but was ultimately medically cleared to play.
Grief counselors were on hand today at the high school to help students cope with the sudden loss of their classmate.
"All the students were very quiet in the hallways the football players, some of they were crying," says student Nick Radwani. "They even put a banner up in the hallway for him there were tons of signatures. I signed it myself."
Vick is being called an amazing athlete who not only excelled on the field but as a great person.
A prayer service for Jacob Vick is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Corinth Baptist Church in New Kent. The public is invited.
