RPS Action Squad Tackles Change in Richmond Schools

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND - A group of Richmond mothers has started a campaign to hold public officials accountable and make schools safer.

They're calling their group the "RPS Action Squad - the squeaky wheel for RPS parents."

They've launched a website and are quickly gaining followers on Twitter. Their goal is to make things happen.

Sarah Milston is the woman behind the project.

"It's about the issue and trying to get it solved as quickly as possible," she says. "We'll just help connect the dots."

She says it when she learned how fast a crosswalk problem was solved at Holton Elementary...

"…with about two weeks of pressure on social media and with elected officials. We wondered why we couldn't just take that and spread it across all the schools."

So the RPS Action Squad was formed with no chain of command and no bureaucracy. Just volunteer parents working for a change.

"It's really just helping facilitate everyone working together faster so that we get issues solved faster."

The group keeps parents informed.

For example, yesterday they contacted every School Board and City Council member, the Police Chief, Mayor, and city administrator asking for specific crosswalk problems at all the schools.

24 hours later, updates were posted on how the officials responded.

"I think that's excellent," says parent Monty Jones. "I think that's going to help the city of Richmond actually address some kind of concerns with our children."

Milston hopes the squad makes a difference and things get taken care of one school at a time.

"If we fix them all, then all of Richmond will be better."
