Richmond on List of Most Dangerous Cities

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND (WRIC) - Richmond is one of the most dangerous cities in the world.

That's at least according to some countries who are warning their citizens not to travel here.

The State Department has warnings for American citizens about which countries they should avoid or consider the risk before traveling to. Other countries do the same thing, and Richmond happens to be on some lists.

If you're from France, Richmond is listed as one of the most dangerous cities in America.

"That's pretty ridiculous," says Richmond resident Jim Zarling. "This is one of the greatest cities I've ever lived in."

"I just think it's really silly, like there's a lot more places, I mean not like around here but in the U.S., where I would be nervous but not here," says Olivia Wathall. "Even at night Richmond's not bad at all."

Though the french national site doesn't say exactly why, the site telling its French citizens that the city should not be traveled through by foot. Other cities included in that list include New York, Baltimore, Washington, DC and Boston.

"Well I definitely feel safe walking the streets. I don't feel any danger here in Carytown for sure."

"If it were early 90s yeah I could see that, we were on our own national list of dangerous places but now I think it's a little ridiculous."

In fact, there's been a 46 percent drop in crime in the city in the past decade, leaving many Richmonders wondering how the city ever made the list.

"When you think of the towns that are usually on this list like probably Beirut and Damascus so I think nothing in Richmond is as bad as happening in Beirut right now."

8News reached out to the Mayor's office for comment. They sent a statement sayin in part:

"We encourage travelers from around the world to come and experience first-hand all that Richmond, the "Best Outdoor Town", has to offer; including the history, the shops, the restaurants, AND the new Arts and Cultural District."
