LAWRENCEVILLE (WRIC) - A family is outraged their loved one's ashes vanished in the mail - only to arrive a day before the funeral service.
The family says they've been in limbo the past few days not knowing where their relative's ashes were or if they would ever be found.
Cyliene Montgomery is still worked up over what happened to her family this week.
Montgomery paid to have her son's ashes shipped to Brooklyn, New York on November 8 with the arrival date for this past Tuesday on November 12.
But when the package did not get to her daughter's home, and a funeral service scheduled for this weekend, Montgomery could not calm down.
"It was tough because I really didn't think it would arrive, because there was no evidence except it leaving Lawrenceville."
Montgomery's son Eugene Smith passed away last month from a heart attack and his sister planned the upcoming memorial.
"Bridgett was organizing the whole service in Brooklyn. It was hard. She just didn't know what to do. She said she couldn't have the service without the ashes."
Montgomery says the past few days have been tough because the Postal Service couldn't give her an explanation.
"If you make a mistake, you find it later, and it went out later than expected. I can expect that. But no one has acknowledged."
A spokesperson for the postal service says they are looking into the matter to figure out why the package did not arrive on time.
