MILLBORO, Va. (AP) - As Virginia state Sen. Creigh (kree) Deeds lay in a hospital with stab wounds apparently inflicted by his son, police are investigating what could have led to the violent encounter.
By many accounts, Creigh Deeds and his 24-year-old son had a close relationship. Gus Deeds left college to help his father's 2009 campaign for governor. A Bath County neighbor says he can't fathom why Deeds apparently stabbed his father before killing himself.
Authorities are still piecing together a motive but they suspect that is what happened Tuesday morning at the Deeds home in Millboro.
Deeds was in fair condition at a hospital in Charlottesville.
State police investigators are expected to update their investigation on Wednesday.
