UVA Holds Vigil for Creigh Deeds

Posted: Updated:

CHARLOTTESVILLE (WRIC) - Senator Creigh Deeds is resting at the UVA Medical Center in good condition.

Just down the road, UVA's College Republicans and University Democrats arranged a joint vigil for the senator.

The purpose is simple. Blue and red don't matter when a state leader's been stabbed and a young man their own age - Deeds' son Gus - is dead.

"We wanted to really put aside our political differences and come together as one UVA community and show support for our senator," says Elizabeth Minneman, UVA College Republicans. "[And] show that the UVA community is thinking and praying for him and his family during this really tragic time."

"It was just unreal reading about all the details of the story," says UVA student Nikki Nazareno. "There's really not much else we can do than just hoping everything will turn out all right."

"The fact that they instantly banded together was not a surprise. It was very heart-warming," says vigil attendee Erin Monaghan.

The state of Virginia is nearly evenly split when it comes to Republicans and Democrats, but there's no split here when it comes to wishing Deeds well.
