CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)—Police have arrested 47-year-old William H. Jones III, a suspect accused of starting a fire in a Chesterfield home Wednesday morning.
Around 9 a.m. on Nov. 27, Chesterfield Fire & EMS responded to a house fire on the 20400 block of Ravensbourne Drive. A relative of the homeowner told 8News Reporter Josh Landon that three children, ages 11, 14 and 17, were in the home when someone threw a Molotov cocktail inside. No one was injured during the incident.
"The cause of the fire right now is there was someone that the family knew came in through the back door, threw something inside the home," said Lieutenant Jason Elmore of the Chesterfield Fire Department.
The family says Jones, the mother's ex-boyfriend, started the fire by throwing something inside the home.
Shameta Ampey, the children's aunt, said, "They saw him throw somethin' through the window; evidently it was a bottle with gasoline in it … the kitchen floor caught on fire."
"No one was hurt, but they could have been hurt. The person that had done it, he was a friend of my sister. They had been dating."
The family did not want to speak on camera, but they are doing okay and will be staying with relatives.
