VDOT: Roads Could Have Been Much Worse

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND (WRIC) - The rain has picked up since earlier Sunday and VDOT says they're obviously going to continue to monitor conditions, but they're relatively pleased, saying things could have been much worse.

For the past few days, crews have been treating roads with a solution to help keep freezing rain from sticking to the ground.

Officials say they haven't seen many accidents today at all as the roads have been pretty clear and many drivers have stayed at home.

The accidents they have seen have been in the northern and western parts of Central Virginia toward Goochland, and Powhatan.

VDOT has 80 trucks on standby ready to go if conditions get any worse but so far officials say it looks like they've lucked out.

"It really could have been a mess out there," says VDOT spokesperson Lindsey LeGrande. "With a couple of degrees lower, we really could have had a huge ice storm here so we're really thankful that this storm kind of went in our favor."
