Sonic Drive-In Apologizes for Chiefs-Redskins Sign

Posted: Updated:

Belton, Mo. (WRIC)—The Washington Redskins' 45-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday was more than a disappointment for Skins fans, but what's causing more of an uproar than the team's now 3-10 record is a Missouri restaurant signboard.

A sign outside a Belton, Mo. Sonic Drive-In read, in all caps, "‘KC CHIEFS' WILL SCALP THE REDSKINS FEED THEM WHISKEY SEND – 2 – RESERVATION." A photo of the sign went viral on Twitter.

Patrick Lenow, Sonic's vice president of public relations, told NBC News that the sign was done "in poor taste" by an employee "known for creative use of his signs."

Lenow said in a statement, "The remarks posted on this message board were wrong, offensive and unacceptable. In a misguided effort to support his football team an independent franchise owner allowed passion to override good judgment. The owner has reinforced with his employees the boundaries of what is acceptable and unacceptable. On behalf of the franchise owner and our entire brand we apologize for the offensive remarks."

The name of the employee who posted the sign has not been released, though Lenow says the person is "very apologetic."
