Inmates Compete in Talent Show for Job Offer

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND (WRIC) - Inmates at the Richmond City Jail will be part of something never done before on Friday, December 13 - a jail talent show.

The winner gets a job offer for when they leave jail.

When a jail cell closes, so can other doors of opportunity. Local comedian Micah White wants to change that by bringing his "RVA Has Talent" show to the city jail.

"If I can teach them that there's something inside of them that they love, and actually capitalize on, they might spend more time working on that versus other things they shouldn't be doing," White says.

But the show isn't just about singing, dancing or poetry. Jail residents have to earn a spot in the show by going through a rigorous job training program.

The organizers of the project say there is a lot of talent here in the jail, and the thought is that once they walk down these stairs, they can eventually get a really good job.

The program teaches inmates how to interview, present themselves and fill out applications - especially the ones that ask if you've been convicted of a felony.

"We have just been blown away by how talented these folks are," says internal program director Sarah Scarbrough. "The way they present themselves, what they're saying... It's truly incredible."

White will hire the talent show winner when they're released and he's working with other companies to help others going through the program.

"It is really all about the job aspect of it," he says. "We use, once again, the talent aspect of it, only to let them know there is light at the end of the tunnel."
