WAVERLY, Va. (WRIC)—Virginia State Police are currently investigating a crash involving a motor vehicle and an Amtrak train at the intersection of Route 40 and Route 460 in Waverly, Sussex County.
Around 6:05 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, the Northeast Regional train 174 was traveling from Norfolk to Boston when it collided with a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria. The driver, Untron Drew, ignored warning lights and attempted to drive around a functional crossing bar.
The train, consisting of an engine car and eight passenger cars, struck the Crown Victoria at 79 miles per hour. None of the train's 44 passengers and 5 crew members were injured. The train did not derail and has been cleared to continue on to Boston.
Drew was med flighted to VCU Medical Center, where he is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.
Drew's car was an old police vehicle that had been auctioned off to a private citizen.
Virginia State Police have determined that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
