HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)—Police are taking holiday crime seriously, especially in store parking lots.
Once again this year, the Henrico County Police Division has stepped up patrols at big malls like Short Pump Town Center, as well as smaller retailers.
While police are looking for shoplifters, they also want to help keep you safe. They say the biggest thefts happen this time of year when people leave their cars unattended and full of valuables in parking lots.
"Typically, we find in the parking lot areas that people are putting their packages and their high-dollar items—even purses, laptops, cell phones—leaving them in an unlocked car," said Lieutenant C.J. Maurice of the Henrico County Police Division. "That's a crime of opportunity, and an unlocked vehicle is an invitation."
Police recommend keeping your vehicle locked at all times, and reporting any suspicious activity.
