Three Candidates Compete for Superintendent of Richmond Public Schools

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND (WRIC) - Richmond Public Schools has seen superintendents come and go, yet issues still remain.

The last superintendent, Doctor Yvonne Brandon, resigned before her contract was up.

Now there are three candidates that could replace her. Doctor Dana Bedden, Doctor Anthony Jackson and Doctor Calvin Watts all want to lead Richmond Public Schools.

Doctor Bedden was a Superintendent in the Irving Independent School District in Texas two years ago. He's now an adjunct professor at two universities with degrees from Virginia Tech, Penn State and the University of Florida.

Doctor Jackson is currently the Superintendent for schools in Nash-Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He has degrees from Walden University, North Carolina Central University and East Carolina University.

Doctor Watts is currently the Assistant Superintendent in Gwinnett County, Georgia. He has degrees from Howard and Argosy Universities.

All the candidates have decades of experience, but skeptics aren't sold.

Marty Jewell is a former Richmond Council member. He's not sure the candidates have what it takes.

"We are in a troubled school district," he says. "It's going to take someone with almost magical abilities to turn this school system around. No one is looking for a PhD in education from Harvard, but we certainly are looking for someone who at least has a track record of having turned around a school district."

The School Board wants to make a decision by Monday, Dec. 23 and the president says any of these men will  be ready for the tough job ahead.

"They are smart people," says School Board Chair Jeff Bourne. "And they have done their homework on Richmond, just as we've done our homework on them; and so they know the challenges."

Before that decision is made, the public will have a chance to meet all three candidates at Albert Hill Middle School on Wednesday, Dec. 18 from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

The School Board will be providing bus transportation for Richmond residents to the forum.
