CHESTERFIELD (WRIC) - Chesterfield Police are at a standstill and are again asking for the public's help in finding the person who shot the stray bullet that killed 7-year-old Brendon Mackey.
Mackey was struck by a stray bullet while walking with his dad on July 4 before a fireworks show in Brandermill. Investigators spent weeks canvassing the surrounding area.
Police are now asking for help finding the weapon and they're warning residents against celebratory gunfire ahead of New Year's Eve.
Police say they've done everything they can do at this point, including the canvass, testing guns, and casings but now are at a dead end, hoping someone will come forward and give them the break they are desperately looking for.
"The family's looking for answers and that's part of our job to investigate and place charges when appropriate," says Capt. Chris Hensley.
After canvassing nearly 2,000 homes for weeks, seven guns have been tested and come back negative. Several bullet casings found outside the target area were also tested and came back negative. With no new leads, investigators are hoping someone in the public steps up.
Captain Hensley says someone must have seen something as this happened on July 4 around 9 p.m. With crowds of people out celebrating, not only hoping someone comes forward, but that this case serves as an important lesson ahead of New Year's Eve.
"If something could come out of this, it's that people understand that randomly firing firearms into the air for celebration or for any other reason is not the appropriate use of a firearm."
Chesterfield Police say they'll be cracking down on celebratory gunfire New Year's Eve in an effort to prevent tragedies like the death of Brendon Mackey.
There is a reward of nearly $10,000 for any information leading to an arrest.
You can still donate to that fund by going to any BB&T bank and donate to the Brendon Mackey account.
