Work Set On Safety Upgrades Over Afton Mountain

Posted: Updated:

WAYNESBORO, Va. (AP) - Work on safety and traffic flow improvements along Interstate 64 over Afton Mountain will start next year.
Gov. Bob McDonnell and the Virginia Department of Transportation announced $4.6 million in technology upgrades Friday that include traffic cameras over a 13-mile stretch, visibility detection sensors and signs alerting motorists to changing weather conditions.
The contract was awarded to G4S Technology of Springfield.
VDOT spokesman Ken Slack says the upgrades are necessary to help prevent accidents along the stretch of interstate that often sees fog.
Media outlets report the project is expected to be finished by the summer of 2015.
