RICHMOND (WRIC) - An 8-pound dog that went missing for a year is finally back home with her family.
Penny vanished last Christmas from her Columbus, Ohio home and just days ago she was found, right here in Richmond.
Jone Mason McGregor's family is whole again now that the pint-sized pooch is back after a year on the run.
‘We were like the sad family that showed up at the pound every day for months," she says.
Last year as Jone and her family packed up to go away for Christmas, penny vanished from the backyard.
They think the four-year-old dog slipped under the fence and got away. But how far she went is something no one expected.
"It's 471 miles," McGregor says. "I burst into tears. I couldn't believe it."
A few days ago, Penny was found abandoned in a Richmond hotel room hundreds of miles away.
The McGregors don't know who she's been with or where. They just know they never let go of hope that they'd get their girl back.
The family drove to Richmond over the weekend to pick her up and begin their new journey together in Ohio -- making this year the happiest of holidays for everyone.
"It's really an amazing Christmas gift to our family," McGregor says.
The McGregors hope to learn more about where penny has been this whole time. They have so many questions to answer.
