HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)—The Henrico County Police Division has released new surveillance photos of two suspects wanted for assaulting a homeless man inside a West End McDonald's over the weekend.
Investigators believe the two black men slapped a 40-year-old man in the face around 5 a.m. on Dec. 28 inside the McDonald's at 7118 W. Broad St.
It's a bizarre crime, and police are still trying to figure out the motive.
"There was no money, nothing, taken from this victim," said Lieutenant Linda Toney of the Henrico County Police Division. "He was just slapped while he was there."
The victim, who is homeless, had been resting at a table when he was approached by the hoodie-clad suspects. The man suffered only minor injuries to his face; he was actually able to get up and run after the suspects, before they jumped into a vehicle outside the restaurant and drove off.
"It is somewhat bizarre," Toney said. "That's why we're asking people; this is not something you want to think about happening when you go to sit down in a restaurant."
During the early stages of the investigation, police suspected this incident may have been part of the knockout game, which has become popular across the country. People walk up to strangers on the street and punch them, sometimes knocking them to the ground, before running off. Saturday's crime doesn't appear to fit this trend.
"The things that we have heard about with the knockout game will be people that randomly punch people, sometimes racially motivated, then also that it would be recorded," Toney said. "So, I can see maybe in one instance in the beginning where people may have thought this was similar."
The suspects are approximately 16 to 20 years old, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and weigh 140 to 160 pounds. One suspect was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, the other a blue hooded sweatshirt.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Metro Richmond at 804-780-1000.
