RICHMOND (WRIC)—Richmond Fire crews performed a New Year's Day water rescue off of Brown's Island, near Tredegar Street.

At 4:42 p.m. on Jan. 1, a bystander observed two rafts in the James River, the occupants of which appeared to be in distress.

According to Lieutenant Robbie Hagaman of the Richmond Fire Department, seven passengers were involved in the incident. One of the rafts capsized. Six people were able to get back onto the raft and make it to a nearby island, but one person had to cling to a log and wait to be rescued.

No injuries were reported.

The water is at permit level now, meaning a permit is necessary to be in the water.
