RICHMOND (WRIC)—A 78-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her son on Sunday evening in the City of Richmond's first homicide of the year.
On Jan. 5, there was a frenzy of police activity outside the victim's apartment on the 1900 block of Cedar Street. Several Richmond Police officers, including some from the forensics team and Major Crimes Unit, are investigating the incident.
At 4:41 p.m. on Sunday, a family member found an unresponsive female inside the apartment and called 911. Police officers arrived within one minute and pronounced Richmond native Emma B. Cook dead at the scene from an apparent stab wound.
Investigators spoke with Cook's family and searched the inside of the apartment for clues.
"Right now they are searching through the apartment; they're waiting for the medical examiner," Daniel Minton, of the Richmond Police Department, said Sunday evening. "The medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death."
There was no sign of forced entry at the apartment, indicating that Cook may have known her killer. Police quickly developed leads in their investigation, including the fact that Cook's vehicle was missing. Her car was spotted at a hotel on the 2600 block of Chamberlayne Avenue. RPD arrested the victim's son, 44-year-old Ronnie S. Cook, of no known address, at the hotel and charged him with murder, robbery and grand larceny.
"This is unbelievable," said Alicia Rasin, who was a friend of Emma Cook's for more than 30 years.
Rasin says Cook was retired from working in public schools.
"She was a custodian for many, many, many years," Rasin said. "She would feed anyone; she would do anything for anyone."
Family members and friends described Cook as young at heart.
"[A] very sweet, caring and loving person," Rasin said.
Anyone with further information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Metro Richmond at 804-780-1000.
