UPDATE: The Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services has ruled that the cause of the deadly blaze was accidental, related to a cooking fire.
The deceased has been identified as 57-year-old Carlton L. Powell, of 3214 North Avenue.
RICHMOND (WRIC)—Firefighters discovered a body late Tuesday night while battling an apartment house fire in the city's North Side.
At 11:50 p.m. on Jan. 7, the Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services responded to an apartment fire at 3214 North Avenue. A neighbor called in the fire, which was visible from the upstairs and back of the structure.
Lieutenant Robbie Hagaman said the blaze was marked under control around 12:15 a.m. on Jan. 8.
Crews discovered a deceased adult in the upstairs apartment. The age and gender of the body have not yet been released.
According to the Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the fire is not suspicious and the incident will not be investigated as arson. The fire marshal is investigating the exact cause of the fire, which is believed to have started in the upper apartment's kitchen.
No other injuries have been reported. The Greater Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross has been called to assist the residents who live on the first floor of the apartment house.
