Movieland Employees Robbed at Gunpoint

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND (WRIC)—The Richmond Police Department has arrested one of three suspects who robbed the popular Bow Tie Movieland at Boulevard Square early Tuesday morning.

Around 2:40 a.m. on Jan. 14, officers were flagged down at the multiplex at 1301 N. Boulevard. According to RPD, three masked suspects, all armed with handguns, robbed several employees as they were closing up the building. All three suspects fled on foot.

The theater was closed to the public at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported.

"It's very shocking to me; I'm surprised," one moviegoer said. "This is a very nice area to live in."

Her feelings mirror those of many who went to the movies today, especially those who frequent Movieland.

"People our age want to come to the movies and feel safe," Joan Purcell said. "Gosh, robbers … somewhere else, not going into a movie!"

Richmond Police have since stepped up patrols in the area, as they continue to investigate exactly what happened. The theater was open for business as usual during the day on Tuesday, but the incident is causing moviegoers to worry.

"I would say that there could be more arrests possible," said Lieutenant Chris Gleason of the Richmond Police Department.

Police say the movie theater is usually a safe place to visit, even late at night.

"I feel safe at night time," Alice Ellis said. "It's very lit up at night time … It's just something happened."

Gleason adds that the entire area surrounding Movieland, including businesses, is part of an improving area where crime is dropping.

"That area has [undergone] a tremendous revitalization," Gleason said. "It draws a large number of citizens into the city from the surrounding areas."

Police are not releasing any other details about the robbery, or the names of those involved, as they want to protect the investigation.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Metro Richmond at 804-780-1000.
