Snowstorm Losing Steam, Warnings Still in Effect

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND (WRIC)—The ABC 8 News StormTracker weather team is keeping a close eye on a winter storm that will widely affect the Commonwealth Tuesday afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for most of Virginia, and many area school systems are closed in anticipation of the snow.

Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for most of the viewing area north of US-460 until Midnight. After splitting in two with the first batch of moisture, with most of the first going to Northern Virginia, round 2 is filling in over us.  This snow should last until around 10 p.m. in the metro region and until midnight or 1 a.m. in the Northern Neck.

Overall, accumulations will range from 1" South of the Tri Cities to 2"-3" in the Metro Area and 3" to 6" north of a line from Charlottesville to Doswell to Tappahannock.  Overnight the clouds will break, but it will be windy and cold with overnight lows in the single digits west to teens east.

Wednesday will be sunny, brisk and cold with highs only in the lower to middle 20s over us.  Fair skies and chilly temps are on tap for Wednesday night here in Central Virginia.  Overnight lows will fall into the single digits where you have snow on the ground and about 10 to 15 where there is none.

We will continue with the series of Alberta Clippers coming down from the northwest over the next few days.  Each one of these will bring in some cloudiness into the area. However the risk of precipitation with each of these systems looks to be very low until we reach early next week.

Thursday highs will warm back up into the upper 20s and the lower 30s as the first system comes by.   Friday will be sunny and cold with highs around 40.

Another clipper comes by on Saturday and one on Monday into Tuesday.  Right now the one on Monday looks to have the best chance of producing precipitation with it.  However over the weekend highs should warm back into the 40s so that this time, no problems are anticipated.
