Baby, it’s Cold Outside

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND (WRIC)—The ABC 8 News StormTracker weather team is monitoring a blast of arctic air that will keep regional temperatures below freezing until the weekend.

A few clouds moved across Central Virginia on Wednesday night, preventing temperatures from dropping into the single digits. Thursday will still be very cold; temperatures will only climb as high as the upper 20s to lower 30s, under partly sunny skies. On Thursday night, skies will become clear and it will be very cold again, with lows around 10 degrees.

Even though the Commonwealth's interstates and primary highways have been cleared in the wake of Tuesday's snowstorm, the Virginia Department of Transportation is still encouraging drivers to stay off the roads if possible, as black ice is likely throughout the region. VDOT says many secondary and neighborhood streets are still covered in packed snow that will remain until temperatures rise above freezing. More than 150 schools and major school districts remain closed Thursday due to these road conditions.

Friday will remain very cold, with highs in the middle to upper 20s under mostly sunny skies. A weak weather system will approach the region on Saturday; this will bring more clouds into Central Virginia, but it will also warm us up into the lower 40s.

Partly sunny skies will return for Sunday and Monday, with highs around 40 degrees. Another push of arctic air will slide in later Monday night, keeping our high temperatures in the lower to middle 30s for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday along with partly sunny skies.
