RICHMOND (WRIC)—The ABC 8 News StormTracker weather team is closely monitoring a Southern winter weather system that could bring the Richmond area a few inches of snow between Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 4 p.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday for many cities and counties in our viewing area, including the City of Richmond and the counties of Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover, Amelia, Dinwiddie, New Kent, King William, Charles City, Prince George, Brunswick, Essex, King and Queen, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, and Prince Edward.

A winter weather system over the Gulf Coast states will move north and east on Tuesday, spreading clouds into Central Virginia during the morning. As we head into the afternoon, snow will develop between 2 and 4 p.m. from south to north. The snow will be light at first, but become steadier as we head into the evening. The snow will taper off around 4 a.m. Wednesday, and our low temperatures will drop back to near 10 degrees.

Tuesday night we will have snow over the area. However, we still have to deal with the dry air that is over us that will hinder some of the snow in the region.  Right now the accumulations are mostly likely on the order of 1""-3"" from Northwest to Southeast in the Metro Area.

To our southeast, we will see snow on the order of about 3"" to 6"" when you look at areas down to the southeast.  Hampton Roads will get 6""-10"" but also a little sleet.  Lows will be in the lower teens.  Sunshine returns Wednesday with highs in the upper 20s.  Warmer weather continues to develop through the end of the week with highs in the 50s and showers over the weekend and into next week.
