New Kent County Residents Prepare for Snow Storm

Posted: Updated:

NEW KENT COUNTY (WRIC) - Neighbors to the south and west of Richmond are expected to get the brunt of the upcoming snow storm. This southern storm could dump more snow in that area and people were definitely out and about getting for it.

At the Food Lion in New Kent, people were stocking up on the snow day essentials.

"Trying to get prepared for the storm," says Karen Robertson. "[I] wasn't prepared last time, so I'm picking up some water and some milk and things for the kids to snack on because they're probably going to be in the house."

"Usually we're not that busy in the mornings, especially on a Tuesday and it's been kind of wide open since about 8 a.m." says Manager Stan Brown. "Once got people moving along, it's been pretty steady."

Lews Grant was stocking up on a few things for his family, including his dogs. He plans on taking them out in whatever snow falls.

"With the dogs, they get out … they run, jump, play, slide.... wipe the paws off when they come inside...wipe their bellies off... and just enjoy. ," he says.

While people are getting what they need, the sheriff's department is busy preparing for the winter weather. They have SUVs that they'll use once the roads get too dangerous for their cars.

"We don't want these front wheel drive cars out," says Lt. Jamie Hamby. "We'll bring the SUVs and we'll pick dispatchers up and get them to work safely and get them home safely as well as taking our calls for service."

They also have to assist state police with calls on the interstate.

"We use the interstate to get from one side of the county to the other, so anything that we come upon we stop out with. And call them for assistance if we need it."

Those sheriff's deputies will also double up two to a vehicle to stay safe while helping people. They ask that if you don't have to be out on the roads, please stay home.
