Virginia Restaurants Can Now Advertise Happy Hour

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND (WRIC) - Virginia restaurants can now advertise happy hour specials for the first time.

The Virginia ABC Board voted to ease some restrictions and restaurant owners in the area say this is a big step forward.

Adam Kretowizz, General Manager of The Blue Goat in Richmond has some work to do.

"Signage out front saying happy hour…our Facebook...our website--I'll now put it on there," he says. "This is such a huge marketing tool, that it's great to have the freedom to do that now in Virginia. It's been long awaited and long overdue, so I'm very happy about it."

ABC law used to prohibit bars from promoting any drink specials outside of the actual building.

Now businesses can promote their hours online, radio and newspaper ads.

"We wouldn't be able to tell you about our specific cocktails and what the costs are, but we can tell you from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saison has a happy hour," says owner Jay Bayer.

But they still can't say what the drinks are or name any prices - something owners hope will soon change.

I think everybody should recognize that it's a step in the right direction," Bayer says. "We're moving forward. We're making progress in re-addressing some of these old laws."

"We need to take it further," Kretowizz says. "I should be able to say exactly what we're selling and exactly what the price is. It just benefits the consumer. I don't see any why we couldn't just say 'margaritas for $2.50.'"
