Security Guard Attacked at GRTC Bus Depot Given Donation Check

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND (WRIC) - There's new hope for the security guard viciously attacked at the RVA Street Art festival in November.

He received a check Thursday from organizers to help pay his medical bills.

He was patrolling the festival at the old GRTC Bus Depot on Cary Street when he was attacked. Newsom says he doesn't remember much until he woke up in a hospital bed.

His return to the site of the RVA Street Festival felt much better this time.

"Well, a lot better," he says. "From what they said I looked like."

The healing security guard received a check for more than $8,000 - all donations from people who wanted to help out the 66-year-old.

"It means a lot," he says. "It will help me pay for some of the bills I have."

Newsom's niece Judy has been helping take care of him since the attack and says his medical and dental bills are getting into the thousands.

"Really good that the community came together and pitched in what they could to help my uncle," she says.

Organizers set up a donation website which is where most of the money came in.

Newsom was presented his check appropriately in front of the human kindness mural part of the street festival that took over the old GRTC Bus Depot where Newsom was attacked.

The area has been closed off to the public ever since and Councilman Jon Baliles wants to see that change.

"It's pretty amazing," he says. "And we're going to do everything we can to get it open."

Newsom has been unable to work since the assault - but that's not all he cares about.

"I hope it don't happen to anyone else."

Newsom says he feels better each day and does hope to get a job as soon as he can.
