HENRICO (WRIC) - A Henrico girl who fell through ice remains in critical condition.
The incident happened Sunday in a pond near the Treehouse Apartments on Wilkinson Road.
Fire officials say the 9-year-old may have been under water for 11 minutes before she was finally rescued.
Neighbors that live near the pond are not surprised and say this was growing concern that could've been prevented.
Demtrius Kelley has been worried something like this would happen.
"It actually hurts really bad," he says. "It could be anybody's child. It could even be your own child.
With no sign or fence, neighbors say kids are always playing in or near the woods where the pond is located and sometimes aren't supervised.
"You don't know what could be back there."
What was there Sunday was a thin layer of ice over a retention pond that both a girl and one rescuer fell through.
The rescuer is now okay, but Henrico fire officials say water that cold is extremely dangerous.
"You've got about 3-4 minutes before you start seeing serious signs of hypothermia," says Cpt. Daniel Rosenbaum of Henrico Fire.
The girl was under at least 11 minutes and in cardiac arrest when she was rescued, but quick response may end up saving her life.
Fire officials are not releasing her name, but also say it's never a good idea to go on any icy pond in Central Virginia because the temperatures fluctuate way too much for them to stay frozen.
"We do have more ice on the ponds but it's still in the Richmond area that ice is not able to support the weight to go ice skating and fishing," Rosenbaum says.
8News contacted the apartment complex as to whether or not they will put up a warning or fence. They say they are waiting to hear back from police if that's their responsibility or not.
Henrico detectives say there will be no criminal charges at this time as this all appears to be an accident.
