RICHMOND (WRIC) - In just a few months, baseball and racing will merge for a big golf tournament.
A press conference at the Diamond Monday was filled with excitement for what's to come.
The Flying Squirrels and Richmond International Raceway will be teaming up for a golf tournament at the Dominion Club to raise money that will go back into the community.
"It's not just a golf event," says RIR President Dennis Bickmeier. "It's what happens to the money that's raised down the road, and that's when we are writing checks to non-profits, to help them carry on their mission."
Anyone will be able to assemble to play some golf at the June 3 tournament, but perhaps one of the biggest draws is the celebrities who could be roaming the course - possibly some baseball players and NASCAR drivers.
"[With] the celebrities we'll have at the tournaments as well our people, people will want to see and meet and get autographs from, so I have no doubt we will have an eclectic group of folks," says Flying Squirrels' Todd "Parney" Parnell.
All the details are still coming together, but RIR and the Squirrels are already eyeing non-profits and causes they want to support.
"One of the things we have worked on for the last four years is specifically trying to get inner city youth to play baseball again," Parnell says.
And that means some run down fields in the city could get a makeover.
