HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)—On Thursday, Henrico County Public Schools announced it will eliminate the President's Day holiday on Monday, Feb. 17 because of the more than six days of instruction students have missed this academic year due to inclement weather.
President's Day, Monday, Feb. 17, will now be a regular school and work day for HCPS students, teachers and staff. The school district says all other scheduled half-days and holidays, including spring break, are not affected by this change.
"While we value the tremendous benefits of having dedicated professional development time for staff, under the current circumstances it is best to devote this time to student instruction," said Superintendent Patrick Kinlaw. "We feel it is appropriate to announce this change now to give everyone plenty of time to adjust."
On Wednesday, Chesterfield County Public Schools announced it was eliminating its President's Day holiday, along with multiple early release days due to inclement weather.
Petersburg City Public Schools students will not only have to attend school on President's Day, they also now have to go to school on Memorial Day and their spring break has been shifted.
There's no word yet on whether Richmond Public Schools or other area school districts will follow suit.
